The Maximus SMOMS team supports operations at the NOAA Environmental Satellite Processing Center. We are responsible for ensuring reliable operation of the systems that decode the data coming from weather satellites, make images, perform scientific analyses to make higher level products, and make these products available to National Weather Services (NWS) local forecast offices, NWS supercomputers running advanced numerical models, and a host of other users at NOAA, other government agencies, international users and more.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
•Identify and communicate technical problems, processes and solutions, and be prepared to convert code provided by scientists into code capable of running in a production environment, including software design, engineering, and debugging
•Provide immediate code fixes for problems impacting product delivery/quality in near-real-time
•Assist in the collection and documentation of user requirements and prepare reports, manuals and other documentation on the status, operation and maintenance of software
•Will require individual to program, configure, integrate, test, modify, and debug applications which process and distribute NOAA weather data
•Development and implementation of both fixes and enhancements are managed using the Software Development Life Cycle as required by the customer
•Work at other NOAA facilities maybe required periodically
•Due to the 24/7 nature of our operations and the “life and property” requirements of our customers, the scientific programmer will occasionally need to work outside normal business hours to address off-hours problems

•Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years’ of related experience OR Master’s Degree and two (2) years’ related experience using these key elements of the target software environment:
oLinux, bash shell, perl, python
oF95, F77, java, C, C++
oScientific data formats such as HDF-4, HDF-5, netCDF
oPHP, Python, and Shell scripting

Additional experience and desired qualifications:
•Java script, xml, jboss
•Meteorological data formats such as bufr, grib2, McIDAS, 1b satellite formats
•Geographical Information Systems
•Retrieval algorithm development
•Community Radiative Transfer Model
•Apache Subversion (SVN) or other version control software
•Software development life cycle
•Operational systems support
•C, C++, F95, IDL
•netCDF-4, arcGIS, other meteorological/scientific data formats
•Waterfall and/or Agile SDLC

Physical Requirements:
•Ability to sit for up to 80% of time
•Ability to lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
